Teaching your dog doesn’t have to be a chore.

Since 2011, School For The Dogs has been helping owners and their dogs thrive in New York City. Using humane training methods, our Certified Trainers will help you change your dog’s behavior, cultivate leadership and improve your relationship. Train your dog with us in New York City at our East Village school, in your home, or virtually.

What sets us apart?

  1. A wealth of services and a collaborative team. Thanks to our diverse offerings — in clients’ homes throughout New York City, at our Manhattan studio, and virtually — our trainers are able to work together to create catered programs that help clients meet their goals. Members of our staff consult with each other in order to put together the best possible plan for your dog.
  2. A strong understanding of human and dog behavior. We make training fun for both dogs and people, presenting concepts in ways that our clients find intuitive, and work to build protocols and create lesson plans that will be easy to implement.
  3. Our own training facility. Having our own training facility allows us to hold classes and sessions in a safe, controlled environment, which is especially helpful for dogs who might not be comfortable having a stranger in their home and also allows us to offer our specialized drop-off programs.
  4. Certifications. All our trainers hold, or are in the process of gaining certifications, from the top organizations in the world of dogs and training, including the Certification Council For Professional Dog Training, the Karen Pryor Academy, and the American Kennel Club.

Kate and Annie present fun and effective classes for everything from puppy socialization to scientifically-validated, reward-based behavior modification for stressed-out pups. We enjoy working with them tremendously and trust them to support our special families.

- Dr E'Lise Christensen Bell, DVM DACVB

School for the Dogs is a game changer! Our 4-month old Scottish Terrier attended puppy kindergarten, day school and at-home training. To say he is transformed from the experience is an understatement. He comes on command, sits and loves being in his crate.

- Devon M.

Kate taught us to read our dogs body language, and as a result, our dogs are more confident with us because they know we're going to be able to understand what they need from us.

- Emilee T.

Prior to our training, Coco could never walk past the doorman without barking, lunging, snarling. Now he can do a down-stay and actually relax in front of the doorman. His stress level has decreased significantly and so has mine.

- Leah R.

The training ethos, helpful, welcoming community, down-to-earth vibe, and sense of humor about it all are so much more than I'd hoped for when I first Googled 'dog trainers.' Lord knows the East Village didn't need another restaurant or bar, it needed School For The Dogs. I wish every neighborhood had one.

- Stephanie H.

Often, courses about dog training focus on teaching behaviors like sit and down and stay, which are all very important. This course covers that stuff, but it really is more about understanding how your dog learns. Once you understand that, it helps you address unique situations that may arise. I just feel like I have a better tool set to address things now.

- Jamie B.

I loved hearing what Annie has to impart in this course. It was like getting an in depth private session with her that I could do on my own schedule. I liked that she doesn't try to push one way of training, but is all about positive reinforcement and not punishment. There's so much information here that the average new dog owner needs to know.

- Bobbie R.

This course was clear and encouraging. Each lesson helped me understand some of the fundamental actions that were shaping the behavior of my dog. Now we understand each other better/ I've even got him coming when I call - that might sound small but it felt impossible before this course.

- Clarissa R.

Not only have we seen tremendous results but our confidence as first time dog owners has increased.

- Jessie F.

Kate is a miracle worker. She is patient and able to make the humans good trainers which is just as important as training the dogs. She explains the exercises and works with you to make sure you are doing it right while keeping it fun!

- Betsy V.

In the past Jake would only know one reaction – to bark and scream and lunge at any dogs passing by and never take his eyes off the other dogs as they walked by. However, by positively rewarding Jake for disengaging after he is focused on another dog, we have broken his aggression cycle.

- Denise L.

Our little guy will now sit, stay, and comes on command, will pay attention when we say his name, maintain eye contact when necessary to stabilize him from distraction, and walk by our sides with a loose leash rather than zig zagging all over the street.

- Chris M.

Rex and I are able to walk by dogs of all sizes now, and if he feels stressed out he looks at me for a reward instead of acting out.

- Deirdre P.

I can always rely on Annie, Kate and the team at School For the Dogs to use scientifically based behavior modification therapy and training methods and their knowledge and extensive experience yields results! This is how dog training should be!

- Dr. Georgia Weber, DVM

The training was very specific to our needs, and after the first session we were seeing results at home.

- Veken C.

School For The Dogs was great in helping me understand and help my terrier who was very loud and aggressive towards other dogs on the street. Their trainers are amazing at getting to know 'what makes your dog tick' and also at educating/training us humans to help our dogs enjoy life.
