14 OctA Humane Dog Halloween: Paint your dog, Party & Parade!

At School For The Dogs, we believe that dogs do indeed look cute in costumes. Is there anything cuter than a dachshund in a hot dog bun? No. No, there is not. But, as much as we care deeply about cuteness, we also feel that a dog's feelings should be respected if he does not want to pretend to be Yoda.

Unfortunately, sometimes a human might not notice the signs of a dog's discomfort–discomfort that isn't so hard to understand! Just imagine finding yourself suddenly in a lycra suit that you might think you'll have to wear forever. You would be stressed too.

Now imagine being in a forever-lycra suit, surrounded by four-legged bumblebees and sexy nurses. Indeed, for dogs, it can be truly a scary day.

But don't fret! There are ways to celebrate Halloween with your dog without stressing him out and without skimping on your requisite cuteness intake.

Join us on October 31st for our Humane Dog Halloween!

PARTY

We have a limited number of spots open for an off-leash party in our outdoor grassy School Yard, where we will be holding a costume contest, with the contestants being judged both on the creativity of their costume and on their level of overt happiness.

OCTOBER 31, 12:30-2:30 PM – REGISTER HERE ($20)

PARADE

Between 2:30 and 2:45 PM on Saturday October 31st, we will congregate at the northwest corner of East 2nd Street near Avenue A for an East Village parade. Animals of any age and with any number of legs are welcome. No advance signup required. The route will stop by dog-friendly establishments that will be prepared with goodies for School For The Dogs' canine trick-or-treaters; the parade will terminate at the Little Missionary Day Nursery Halloween Party at the St. Mark's Church on East 10th Street and 2nd Avenue.

OCTOBER 31, 2:30-3:30 PM – NO REGISTRATION REQUIRED – FREE!

PAINT

In the days leading up to the big H, come by School For The Dogs to try check out PetPaint, our specialty brand of dog-safe fur color. You can also book a 45-minute session with our in-house dog-fur coloring specialist who will help you use our selection of paints, chalks and stencils to create the ultimate unique (and humane!) dog costume.  Check out some of our extra colorful students Instagram!
